If the house edge is a long-run drizzle, variance is the weather this afternoon. Blackjack pays 3:2 on a natural, loses the whole bet on a bust, and lets you double. Those jumps make the path jagged even when the average is tiny.
Bankroll talk on this page is for virtual chips and study. It is not financial advice and not a real-money plan. Gambling involves risk.
What variance is
Two players can use the same chart and the same Hi-Lo tags and finish a hundred hands in opposite directions. Nothing in that sentence is a paradox. The sample is too small for the average to show. Counting does not flatten the path; it only (in models) tilts the average a little over a huge sample. See advantage play.
Progressive systems try to “beat” variance by chasing losses. They usually make the swings worse. That is the subject of betting systems vs a count.
What a practice bankroll is for
In the trainer you start with virtual chips so you can spread bets with the count without thinking about rent. A “bankroll” in training means: enough units that a cold shoe does not force you to stop the drill. If you go broke in twenty minutes, shrink the spread or reset and keep scoring the count, not the stack.
Textbook unit sizing (a small fraction of total chips per minimum bet) exists so variance has room. It is not a daily quota.
Why “daily profit” is the wrong score
A daily profit target makes you press after losses and leave after wins. That is a human schedule, not a math schedule. The count does not care that it is Tuesday. In practice, log:
- Running-count misses per shoe
- True-count conversion misses
- Chart errors (16 vs 10, pair of 8s)
Those numbers improve with home drills. Chip luck does not.
Track the skill, reset the chips
Reset the virtual bankroll when it gets in the way. The trainer’s job is reps at felt speed. If you want a deeper count later, the Hi-Opt II overview still sits on the same variance facts — a fancier tag set does not cancel losing shoes.
Run a shoe and ignore the swing
Check RC and TC. Reset chips anytime. Practice only.
FAQ
What is variance in blackjack?
The random swing around the long-run average. Good play still loses shoes. That is normal.
Should I set a daily profit goal?
No. Score count accuracy and chart errors. This site uses virtual chips only.
